JPG

JPG is a common file format for pictures and can be opened with almost all programs.

The abbrevation JPG or JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group and dates back to a congress in 1992, when a group of companies and researchers agreed on standards for the storage and compression of images.
Today, JPG is the most common file format for digital images. Most mobile phones, digital cameras or scanners save images as JPG files by default. One advantage: JPGs can easily be compressed, which means that an image's amount of data is decreased significantly. That's why, JPGs are suitable for websites which are supposed to load quickly. Though, every compression reduces the quality of an image. Therefore, file size and desired image quality should be carefully weighed against each other in every case.
