Clipping of Photos

Clipping means to isolate and cut out an object from its unwanted background.

For this purpose, the contours of the wanted object are carefully traced. A so called clipping path is created which is the starting point for further editing. Here, one distinguishes between partial and total clipping. In the latter case, the background is completely removed and replaced by a white or transparent one or the clipped object is transferred into another picture. Whereas partial clipping means that the background of a picture is softened or blurred in order to turn the spotlight on the clipped object.

Clipping Techniques

There are various clipping techniques for photos. First, there is the possibility to avoid disturbing backgrounds while taking the photo. This works out either by shooting the object in front of a white shadow-free background or by taking dark field pictures. Dark field pictures are taken on reflection-free glass with a matte-black background which creates a floating effect.

Second, and more common, there is the possibility to clip photos in the retrospect by the means of digital image editing as already described above. Here, the manual generation of clipping paths by the aid of professional tools is the optimum in quality and accuracy, especially when it comes to complex objects.

Accurate clipping is very time-consuming, especially when it comes to large numbers of photos. That's why it saves time and money to outsource this task to our proficient partners who produce fast and perfect results thanks to their routine.
