DPI

DPI, short for dot per inch, is a measuring unit for the resolution of an image, e.g. in case of a print file.

The smallest possible resolution of a digital image is depicted in pixel. A pixel stores any and all information on colour and brightness. When depicted in the CMYK four-colour scheme, every pixel is splitted into four print points according to its colour information. Every dot is printed separately from the others.

DPI is the measuring unit for this process. The higher the number of points per inch (2,54 cm), the higher the resolution of an image. In other words: The higer the point density, the less the single print points are visible to the eye.
